10 Questions to Ask Before You Subscribe to Any AI Tool

October 22, 2026 · 4 min read

Before you subscribe to any AI or creator tool, ask these ten questions. They take about fifteen minutes and catch most of the problems people run into later.

  1. What problem does it solve, and how do I handle that today? If you cannot name the step it shortens, wait.
  2. What does the free plan or trial really include? Note the limits on usage, exports and features.
  3. What is the real price once I add what I need? Seats, credits and add-ons often cost extra.
  4. What is the price at renewal? Introductory rates are often lower than year two.
  5. How is usage counted? Credits, tasks, minutes and words are not interchangeable between tools.
  6. Can I use the output commercially? Check the terms for the plan you would buy, not just the free one.
  7. What happens to my data and uploads? Read how prompts and files are stored and whether they can be used to improve the product.
  8. Can I export my work and leave? Your content, scripts and subscriber lists should come with you.
  9. How hard is it to cancel? Look for self-serve cancellation and the length of any refund window.
  10. Would I notice if it disappeared next month? Check usage after two weeks. If you forgot it, do not pay for it.

How to use the checklist

Copy the ten questions into a note, or use our printable buyer's checklist, and answer them for each tool on your shortlist. Most answers are on the pricing page, the terms page or in a quick test on the free plan.
