How they really differ
The real question is whether you have footage. Descript is an editor, so it needs a recording to work on. HeyGen is a generator, so the script is the input and the video is the output.
Avatar video saves filming time, but viewers can tell it is AI, and some audiences warm to a real face or voice more slowly. Many faceless channels mix avatar segments with screen recordings and B-roll rather than using an avatar for the whole video.
Both are subscriptions with usage limits that differ by plan: export minutes and features on Descript, video credits and avatar options on HeyGen. Check current limits before you commit to a weekly schedule.
Using both
Generate the presenter segments in HeyGen, then assemble them with screen recordings, B-roll and captions in Descript before you publish.
The verdict
Descript if you film or record and need fast editing. HeyGen if you want an on-screen presenter without filming. Faceless channels often end up using both.
